Although I’ve never been to Panera Bread, I have read that they do have Free WiFi and lots of people hang out their with their laptops.
So far as McDonalds, it seems to be a store-by-store basis to whether they have Free WiFi. From my experience, most have paid-WiFi through AT&T.
Some of the strangest places that I’ve come across offering free WiFi are:
1) Safeway Grocery Store – Why would anyone want WiFi at a Grocery store? I never bring my laptop with me when I shop. However, I’m thinking now that if you have a WiFi-enabled smartphone you might be able to make use of it.
2) Highway rest stop – On the way to Yakima, WA I came across a rest stop that offered free WiFi service. Kinda strange since it was in the middle of no where and only had rest rooms.
